Protocols are the basic set of rules which can be used to share data between parties or even networks. For crypto they establish the structure and provide security for blockchains. There are many protocols which exist amongst many blockchains. One example of a modern day protocol would be the internet (e.g., Google Chrome, Internet Explorer). One of the most known protocols in Crypto is Bitcoin (BTC), XRP or even Ethereum.
